About the British Association of Cleaning in Higher Education

The British Association of Cleaning in Higher Education (BACHE) was established in 2004 with funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The Association is one of eleven organisations forming the Higher Education Estates Forum Association (HEEFA) that has a remit associated with Estates and Facilities Management in Higher Education.

Specifically, BACHE provides a forum for cleaning operatives, supervisors and managers and is the primary association providing support for cleaning and associated services within the Higher Education sector. The Association currently has 81 member universities from across the United Kingdom. BACHE aims to standardise training for cleaning staff (in higher education institutions), recognising the importance of professional cleaning activities. BACHE helps higher educational institutions to network and share best practices and cleaning processes thereby achieving the ultimate aim of improving cleaning standards and professionalising the delivery of cleaning and associated services across campuses.

WHAT WE DO

Both directly and indirectly employed university cleaning and associated support services teams are responsible for cleaning and servicing some 14.3 million square meters.   This comprises cleaning a very diverse range of buildings and facilities ranging from teaching rooms, lecture theatres, libraries, sports facilities, specialised research laboratories, conference facilities, catering outlets, banks, shops, art galleries, computer suites, engineering laboratories and art studios, etc. some of which are in use twenty-four hours a day.

Whilst university cleaning and associated support service teams continue to face the challenge of "doing more with less" they consistently strive to support Estates and Facilities Directors with delivering efficiencies and reducing costs.  In doing so, they contribute to improving and maintaining university estates thus, ensuring continual improvement to the student, staff and visitor experience.

In 2022 we changed our name to BACHE-FM and increased the scope to include Soft Services FM.
